COVID-19

Mayor Mark Walter would like to make you aware of changes taking place due to the COVID-19 crisis.

At Old Mill Park on Riverside Drive, the public restrooms are closed until further notice. The playground equipment has been closed for use to protect our citizens and families. The Mayor would like to encourage you to use the walking paths and practice social distancing as recommended.

The WLVFD station has been closed to public use and members have been instructed on proper cleaning, before and after, the use of any equipment.

Mayor Walter encourages social distancing in an effort to limit the spread of the virus. He encourages everyone to follow the CDC guidelines to also include covering coughs and sneezes, handwashing and if you are sick, stay at home. As a community, please take time to check on the elderly and others with health needs.

Working together as the caring community that we are, we will conquer this together.

  • APRIL 8, 2020 UPDATE

Good afternoon- this is Mark Walter, Mayor of West Liberty, sharing some updated information. I know everyone has heard the CDC guidelines many times but now is a very crucial time, not only to know them but to PLEASE follow them.

The newest guideline is for EVERYONE to wear a cloth mask when out to the grocery, pharmacy, or any essential business. I want to remind everyone that the cloth mask should not replace any of the other guidelines recommended. Observe the 6 feet or farther social distancing. Wash your hands frequently. Please use hand sanitizer upon entering the vehicle after shopping. There is signage at each business for instructions about only ONE family member to enter the business. If the business is crowded, please wait to allow enough room, in the store, to allow social distancing, even down each aisle. Avoid shaking hands with anyone.

With the beautiful spring weather and the Easter weekend approaching, Please avoid congregating with family, neighbors, and friends. Limit your Easter gathering to those in the immediate household.

The next couple of weeks is very crucial for the fight to avoid the spread of COVID19 in our nation. Do not let your guard down. Stay Healthy at HOME. Avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary for essentials, work, or to care for a loved one.

I want to thank EVERYONE in our community that are sewing cloth masks for our healthcare workers, EMS, first responders, essential workers, and the general public- to name a few- Patty Hutchinson, Jane Murray, Missy Pennington, Nicole Garcia, Bridgett Murphy, Maudie Nickell, Dee Dee Powers, Sara Benton, Donna B. Davis, and Nellie Buchanan. Everyone, using their talent and skills to make and share these masks, are showing the love and compassion which expresses the heart of our community.

Everyone, that is inclined to pray- continue to pray for a cure, treatment, and a vaccine for this invisible enemy. Pray for all the Healthcare workers, EMS, first responders, essential workers, essential businesses, sanitation workers, support workers in our hospitals and clinics. Please remember the truck drivers that deliver essentials for life. Include our school personnel, students, support staff that are educating our children via social media, and computers. Remember all those involved with feeding our students and senior citizens during these troubled times. Pray for the churches of our community, as they have to find different ways to share God’s word and compassion with one another in an effort to avoid the spread of this virus. Pray for the Leaders of the world, our country, our state, county, and local government.

Remember- STAY HOME/ STAY WELL

  • APRIL 1, 2020 UPDATE

As we continue in this COVID19 crisis, I want to encourage everyone to continue to observe the CDC guidelines to slow down the spread of this virus. Safe at Home is proving to help decrease the spread in our nation. Observing safe distancing, when out doing shopping for the ESSENTIALS, is also helping. Please continue to wash your hands frequently with soap and water, use hand sanitizer when soap and water is not available, and by all means avoid hand shaking. One very important part to protecting yourself is avoiding touching your face with your hands- and this is very hard. Avoid family picnics, birthday parties, neighborhood cookouts, and gatherings that could cause a wide spread of the virus. Enjoy the outdoors when the weather permits, but refrain from children having playdates.

After discussions with Judge Executive John Will Stacy, and the regional director of Gateway Health Center, I have signed an Executive order to protect the health and welfare of the citizens while shopping.

All retail stores will be enforcing social distancing per CDC guidelines. I have directed that only one member per family do the shopping. This is not a time to meet and socialize with your neighbor. Each store will monitor and limit the number of customers in order to maintain safe social distancing. This is a good time to help shop for our elderly population and deliver to their home, in a manner that is safe for both parties. Please shop for immediate needs, to ensure everyone has an opportunity to purchase what they need.

The West Liberty Post Office is limiting the lobby area to 4 patrons at a time. Please observe social distancing while waiting to enter the lobby area.

Morgan County has not experienced a reported positive case of COVID19. With the predictions that a surge with a peak of positive cases nationwide, please take all the precautions to stay safe and stay well.
